Marsh Madness @ Barnegat Bay Marshes

Annual Barnegat Bay marsh clean-up conducted by the Junior Sailing Program of the Barnegat Bay Yacht Racing Association (BBYRA) and Save Barnegat Bay. Each participating Yacht Club selects the youth’s favorite local marsh and plans to rally hand picked trash and debris to their coach boat and then landward to the Club or municipality for proper disposal.

In 2018, over 390 individual sailors removed 57 bags of trash from our beloved, sensitive marsh areas. All 12 clubs in the BBYRA participated! Our goal for 2019 is to host a bay-wide clean-up…including all the clubs in the south bay too!

Bay to Bowl @ Island Beach State Park

The NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife, in partnership with the Conserve Wildlife Foundation of NJ, is excited to offer a 3-day 2-night locavore program for adults 21 years old and older interested in learning what’s edible in and around Barnegat Bay. The program will be held at the Sedge House, located within NJ’s first Marine Conservation Zone. The facility is a renovated duck hunting lodge with seven (7) bunk rooms where participants will live a conservationist lifestyle. Participants will spend time identifying and harvesting edible plants, algae, clams, crabs, and fishing, all while learning about the salt marsh ecosystem, conservation, and renewable resources.

Participants will:

  • Learn what’s edible in and around Barnegat Bay.
  • Learn how to identify, harvest and prepare sustainable local cuisine.
  • Learn to shuck clams and oysters, and how to fillet fish.
  • Leave with a deeper understanding of our natural environment and the importance of being a good steward.

Each meal will feature something locally harvested by participants, and Saturday night’s dinner will consist mainly of harvested resources that will be cooked through demonstration and by participation. Participants should come with open minds and empty stomachs! (Food allergies may not be able to be addressed.)

Cancelled-Discover American Eels @ Barnegat Bay EcoCenter

Join us April 9th at 6pm as we explore the journey of the American Eel. Barnegat Bay Partnership and Save Barnegat Bay are teaming up to bring you a noteworthy hands on learning experience! Barnegat Bay Partnership is conducting a long term monitoring project on juvenile (glass) eels. Glass eels are currently migrating into Barnegat Bay from the Sargasso Sea, and finding their way into our rivers, creeks, and streams. The Barnegat Bay EcoCenter is located next to the Long Swamp Creek where we can find these baby eels! During this program you will have the chance to see these interesting creatures up close and personal, hear from the scientists studying their migration, and learn about their importance to our ecosystem. This is a unique program you are not going to want to miss!

ALL AGES WELCOME!
