THANK YOU, Herring Point Cleanup Volunteers!
On Saturday, March 29, thirty-two volunteers turned out to help Save Barnegat Bay continue our long-term effort to clean up the Herring Point section of the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge in Brick Township.
By our reckoning, this is the 20th year that we have been cleaning up Herring Point!
By keeping more trash coming out in our one day per year than the other side brings in in their 364, we have accomplished a lot on behalf of nature and those who enjoy its wonders.
This year we removed approximately eight cubic yards of junk - including five tires, two toilets, one refrigerator, and the stern section of a boat.
Our base camp for our Herring Point cleanup is at the trail entrance on Mantoloking Road in Brick Township, two-tenths of a mile west of the Mantoloking Bridge in Brick Township, just west of of the Traders Cove marina. The trail leads into "F-Cove", which connects to the bay. We hold this cleanup on the last Saturday of March each and every year. The public is always invited.
STARBUCKS generously provided coffee, delicious pastries, and five volunteers.
The Township of Brick generously provided a dumpster. We are very grateful for the Township's significant help, especially in consideration of the fact that Save Barnegat Bay and Brick Township are presently engaged in a serious controversy over the nearby Traders Cove marina.
Recently returned ospreys hovered under a golden sun as our volunteers enjoyed a perfect day while restoring a wonderful natural setting.
Our next cleanup is Saturday, May 8 @ 9 AM at the Lavallette Bay Beach. The event is informal; come and go as your please. We meet at the Gazebo on Bay Boulevard at Philadelphia Avenue.
On November 1, the first Saturday in November, we hold our annual Reedy Creek fall cleanup at the intersection of Mantoloking and Adamston Roads in Brick Township. The public is invited!
Keep your eye on the Save Barnegat Bay calendar at www.savebarnegatbay.org for these and other cleanup opportunities.
