Sixteen years of Conservation Success with Your Help

Here are some of our "recent" success stories. You may also read about our early history.

2001 - SBB facilitates the addition of 76 acres of oak/pine forest and a stream corridor to Stafford Forge State Wildlife Management Area in Little Egg Harbor Township.

2001 - SBB provides critical support in creating New Jersey's first Marine Conservation Zone around the sedge islands at Island Beach. This allows protection of natural resources, including prohibition of jetskis.

2000 - Using Green Acres funds, SBB assists Ocean County in acquiring 120 sensitive acres in Bayville near Good Luck Point, where SBB previously spearheaded the successful opposition to the 367-unit Baypointe Adult Community.

2000 - SBB uses Green Acres funds to make a critical addition to Riverside Woods natural area in Brick Township.

1999 - Using Green Acres and foundation funding, SBB purchases Little Sedge Island off Lavallette and contributes it to the State of New Jersey.

1999 - SBB spearheads the successful opposition to the 367 unit Baypointe Adult Community proposed on environmentally sensitive land in Bayville near Good Luck Point.

1998 - SBB spearheads and negotiates the 3.5 million dollar, 275 acre Airport Tract conservation project along Kettle Creek using funds from Brick Township, the County of Ocean and the Green Acres Program.

1998 - SBB organizes the volunteer program for the Interpretive Center at Island Beach State Park, the largest daily volunteer nature program in the state of New Jersey.

1998 - SBB purchases Marsh Elder Island off Long Beach Township near Little Egg Harbor and two tracts at Reedy Creek in Brick Township using Green Acres and foundation funding and donates them to the US Fish & Wildlife Service.

1997 - SBB, the Ocean County Freeholders, and a handful of other groups spearhead the successful effort to get the tax-funded Ocean County Natural Lands Trust Fund acquisition program placed on the ballot and approved by the voters.

1996 - SBB donates the Riverside Woods tract to Brick Township using Green Acres funds and a bargain sale from Summit Bank.

1995 - SBB is awarded $800,000 in Green Acres matching acquisition funds for conserving Bay Islands and land at Reedy Creek.

1993 - 1994 - SBB and two other groups take the lead in achieving US Fish & Wildlife Service ownership of Murray Grove and adjacent tracts at Stout's Creek in Lacey Township.

1991-1992 - SBB leads the effort to expand the acquisition boundary of the Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge (Brigantine) to Barnegat, Waretown, Forked River, Lanoka Harbor, Bayville, and Bay Islands north of the bridges at Seaside.

1988 - 1990 - SBB defeats numerous development proposals in the environmentally sensitive Reedy Creek area of Brick Township, including "Meadows at Mantoloking" (243 units), "Reedy Pointe" (48 units) and "Havens Cove" (32 units). SBB spearheads the initiation of US Fish & Wildlife Service acquisition of the Reedy Creek area, which is ongoing today.

1987 - SBB successfully lobbies for the Power Vessel Noise Control Act, which requires that all powerboats have mufflers without cutouts. Today we are working to close loopholes in this Act and for a reasonable speed limit on Barnegat Bay.

1987 - SBB successfully lobbies for the Barnegat Bay Study bill, the state legislation that leads to today's Barnegat Bay National Estuary Program.

1986 - SBB and the Congress of Concerned Citizens of Brick Township successfully lobby for repeal of the Planned Residential Waterfront Community ordinance in Brick Township.

1985 - SBB begins its successful five year battle against the proposed Pelican Cove - 135 condominiums and an expanded marina near the Mantoloking Bridge in Brick Township.
